BOSTON -- The Philadelphia 76ers said goodbye to Allen Iverson and their 12-game losing streak all on the same night. Andre Iguodala scored a career-high 31 points and had nine assists to help Philadelphia beat the Boston Celtics 98-83 on Friday night, just hours after the trade of their troubled superstar became official.

"It's a relief," said Samuel Dalembert, who had 14 points and 12 rebounds to help the Sixers to their first victory since beating Chicago on Nov. 24. "It's like carrying a big bag of potatoes, man, for a long time. It was crazy."

Iguodala topped the career high of 27 points he hit twice in the previous five games as the Sixers adjust to life since Iverson was banished on Dec. 8. Kevin Ollie had 14 points and eight of Philadelphia's 28 assists; the Sixers had just nine turnovers.

"We know that we don't have just one person that we can get the ball to and say, 'Do it,'" guard Willie Green said. "We've got to use each other."

Al Jefferson had 20 points and 14 rebounds and Gerald Green had 20 points and nine boards for Boston, which crumpled defensively without star Paul Pierce and guard Wally Szczerbiak. Usually upbeat Celtics coach Doc Rivers blistered his team for thinking selfishly.

"Not one single player in our locker room today thought how he was going to help us on the defensive end," Rivers said. "They thought about Wally and Paul's shots. ... This team without Wally and Paul has to be a great defensive team. If we're not, we're just going to keep losing."

The Sixers traded Iverson to Denver on Tuesday for Andre Miller, Joe Smith and a couple of first-round draft picks. The deal became official Friday when Iverson passed his physical between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. EST _ too late for Miller or Smith to be eligible to play the Celtics but just in time for Iverson to make his Nuggets debut in their 9 p.m. EST start.

Even without their two new players, the Sixers had little trouble with Boston.

They led by seven points at the half and as many as 11 in the third quarter before the Celtics cut it to four, 75-71, with 10 minutes remaining. But Kyle Korver answered with a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired, and then added another jumper.

The Celtics never got that close again, and Philadelphia scored the last eight points of the game _ six from Iguodala. The game in hand, the team gathered at center court for a subdued celebration.

"After 12 consecutive losses we were looking for the champagne when we came into the locker room," coach Maurice Cheeks said.

In addition to missing Smith and Miller _ and Iverson _ the Sixers were without Chris Webber, who sat out his fourth consecutive game with a sprained right ankle.

Pierce will miss two to three weeks with a stress reaction _ a soft tissue injury _ in his left foot and will not make the five-game West Coast trip that starts Tuesday in Denver. Pierce has missed just 12 games in his career; the Celtics are 3-9 without him.

Brian Scalabrine missed the first half with the flu. Szczerbiak has a sprained right ankle but is expected back to play the Nuggets.

Notes:@ Hall of Famer Tommy Heinsohn, now a Celtics announcer, will skip the team's West Coast road trip because of back problems. ... With Green making his first start this season, this is the sixth lineup the Celtics have used. ... Boston had scored at least 100 against Philly in six straight games.

Victory still out of battling Reds' reach

A gutsy second half effort by Adelaide United gave Melbourne a fright but the reigning A-League premiers escaped with a 3-1 victory at Docklands on Saturday evening.

An 88th-minute goal to Adrian Leijer, completely untroubled by the visitors' defence, was enough to seal United's fate for good after youngster Mate Dugandzic scored the opening two goals.

The three points sent Melbourne temporarily to the top of the A-League, and it will stay there if Gold Coast and Sydney lose this weekend.

Adelaide is left hovering in the middle of the competition table after 12 rounds.

The grand final rematch was the eighth time in a row the Reds have lost against Melbourne, but they often looked every bit as good as their opponents.

Coach Aurelio Vidmar said earlier in the week that the team had been working on self-belief and it certainly showed after the break, when the visitors came out with renewed vigour and kept the Victory on a tight leash.

But a strike by Adam Hughes in the 63th minute could only lessen the blow for United.

He turned a sweet header from Lloyd Owusu around the corner and into the back of the net past Glen Moss, who had a busy night in the box as Adelaide attacked with fervour.

Dugandzic banged in two goals, one on either side of the break, to send the Reds a message that they would have to battle for a win in front of a rabid Melbourne crowd.

He opened the scoring in the 17th minute off the back of an assist from Thai international Sutee Suksomkit, who started for the Victory in his first A-League match.

Sutee seemed to have plenty of confidence on the field and was given ample opportunity on the attack as he shared the midfield with Dugandzic.

Dugandzic extended Melbourne's lead when he finished from a tidy Carlos Hernandez setup after Matthew Kemp threaded a long ball through the ambling Adelaide defence.

The 20-year-old's second goal was almost a nod to the referees, who dealt him a yellow card just minutes earlier for talking back.

Lockyer salivating at Marshall challenge

The one-on-one battle between Benji Marshall and Darren Lockyer is the one that could decide the war, and it has the Kangaroos' skipper salivating ahead of his side's opening Four Nations clash against New Zealand on Sunday morning (AEDT).

While each will need a little help from team-mates, particularly the forwards, whoever comes out on top in this man-on-man match-up at The Stoop in London will put their side within sight of a Four Nations final berth.

"It's not regular that your opposite number is also the opposition captain, but that's a little challenge out there on the field," Lockyer said.

"As I start to think more about the game between now and kick-off, they're are one of the little battles that will get the blood flowing."

Marshall, too, is eagerly awaiting the showdown.

"I love challenging myself ... to get the opportunity to play against the world's best five-eighth in a Test match is something special," he said.

While both will be doing their best to unlock the other side's defence, there is little doubt they will also be called upon to do plenty of tackling.

And it will not be just any tackling - it is stopping Goliaths like Kiwi backrower Frank Pritchard and rampaging Kangaroos lock Anthony Watmough.

Australian backrower Trent Waterhouse has been handed the job of protecting Lockyer, with his main aim keeping Penrith team-mate Pritchard quiet.

"The challenge is there for Trent to come out on top of his team-mate, and I'm sure Pritchard's thinking the same thing," Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens said.

"If anyone knows [Pritchard], Trent knows him.

"It's going to be a good challenge on that side. I said to Trent that if Pritchard gets to Lockyer, then Trent's had a bad game."

The match kicks off at 6:00am AEDT Sunday morning.

The History of Table Tennis

Like many other sports, table tennis began as a mild social diversion. Descending, along with lawn tennis and badminton, from the ancient medieval game of tennis. It was popular in England in the second half of the nineteenth century under its present name and various trade names such as Gossima and Whiff-Whaff. After the name Ping-Pong (an imitation of the sound made by the ball striking the table and the vellum bats that were used) was introduced by J. Jaques Son, the game became a fashionable craze.

The game was popular in Central Europe in 1905-10, and even before this is a modified version had been introduced to Japan , where it later spread to China and Korea. After a period when it had dropped out of favor in Europe, the game was revived in England and Wales in the early twenties. by that time 'Ping-Pong' had been registered as a trademark, so the earlier name of table tennis was re-introduced. National associations were formed and standardization of the rules began, both in Europe and the Far East. Then, over the next sixty years, table tennis developed into a major worldwide sport, played by perhaps thirty million competitive players and by uncountable millions who play less seriously. However, the game itself has not changed in essence since its earliest days, though it is faster, more subtle and more demanding than it was even only twenty years ago.

Ping-pong Diplomacy

One of the first public hints of improved U.S.-China relations came on April 6, 1971, when the American Ping-Pong team, in Japan for the 31st World Table Tennis Championship, received a surprise invitation from their Chinese colleagues for an all-expense paid visit to the People's Republic. Time magazine called it "The ping heard round the world." On April 10, nine players, four officials, and two spouses stepped across a bridge from Hong Kong to the Chinese mainland, ushering in an era of "Ping-Pong diplomacy." They were the first group of Americans allowed into China since the Communist takeover in 1949.

In various ping-pong games, the most famous is the world championship competition, which was held once a year at the beginning, now, it is held twice a year ever since 1957.

In 1904, a shanghai shop keeper called Wang Dao WU, brought 10 sets of table tennis tools home, the game was therein introduced to china.

History of Swimming

The English are considered the first modern society to develop swimming as a sport. By 1837, regular swimming competitions were being held in London's six artificial pools, organized by the National Swimming Society in England. As the sport grew in popularity many more pools were built, and when a new governing body, the Amateur Swimming Association of Great Britain, was organized in 1880, it numbered more than 300 member clubs.

In 1896, swimming became an Olympic sport for men with the 100 metres and 1500 metres freestyle competitions held in open water. Soon after, as swimming gained popularity, more freestyle events were added, followed by the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and finally, the individual medley.

The first modern Olympic Games had only four swimming events, three of them freestyle. The second Olympics in Paris in 1900 included three unusual swimming events. One used an obstacle course; another was a test of underwater swimming endurance; the third was a 4,000-metre event, the longest competitive swimming event ever. None of the three was ever used in the Olympics again.

For a variety of reasons, women were excluded from swimming in the first several Olympic Games. In 1896 and again in 1906, women could not participate because the developer of the modern games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, held firmly to the assumption, common in the Victorian era, that women were too frail to engage in competitive sports. It was only at the 1912 Games when women's swimming made its debut at the prompting of the group that later became known as the International Olympic Committee.

From the humble beginning with four swimming events, the Olympics have developed to 32 swimming races, 16 for men and 16 for women. The Special Olympics, competitive swimming for people with disabilities, has 22 events for men and 22 for women
